Change in Age or School Status of a Dependent

If you have a dependent who...

  • Reached the age of 26,
  • Is under the age of 27, and
  • Graduated from college or is no longer a full-time student,

They are no longer eligible to be on your health insurance.

Next Steps

  1. Your dependent will receive a letter notifying them that they will no longer be insured on your health insurance plan.
  2. If you have questions, contact Human Resources within 60 days of the life event by emailing your HR Business Partner.

If you have a dependent who is...

  • Over the age of 26,
  • Under the age of 27, and
  • Now attending school full time,

They are eligible to enroll in medical coverage through GVSU.

Next Steps

  • Notify Human Resources within 30 days of the life event by emailing your HR Business Partner.
    • You will need to the student schedule or letter from the school they are attending verifying their full-time status.
    • The student schedule or letter of verification from the school should contain the following information: College Name (typed not handwritten), Dependent Name (typed not handwritten), credit hours, and your name (an employee of Grand Valley State University).
  • Human Resources will work with you to enroll your dependent into the GVSU health insurance plan.

If you have a dependent who is...

  • Over the age of 26,
  • Under the age of 27, and
  • Received a letter in the mail from their health insurance provider stating that they are going to lose coverage without proof of full-time student status,

They will need to follow the steps outlined on this page.

Next Steps

  • Submit the student schedule or letter from the school they are attending verifying their full-time status to Human Resources by emailing your HR Business Partner.
    • The student schedule or letter of verification from the school should contain the following information: College Name (typed not handwritten), Dependent Name (typed not handwritten), credit hours, and your name (an employee of Grand Valley State University).
  • If the dependent is no longer a full-time student, please contact your HR Business Partner indicating their last date of being a full-time student. This will be the last date of their coverage.
