Policy Updates Regarding Discrimination, Harassment, and Misconduct

Published February 21, 2025

Grand Valley State University has updated its Policy Prohibiting Discrimination, Harassment and Misconduct (SLT 9.1) and related procedures to comply with changes to applicable federal regulations. These updates apply to all open cases. Key changes include:

  • Informal Resolution: Available for employee respondents in certain cases (excluding student complainant cases involving sexual harassment, sex discrimination, or sexual misconduct).
  • Formal Complaints: Must now be submitted using the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX’s Complaint Form. Reports differ from formal complaints and offer resources and support.
  • Hearing Process: Decision-makers cannot rely on statements from individuals unwilling to participate in cross-examination at a live hearing.
  • Jurisdiction: GVSU's grievance process no longer covers alleged violations occurring outside of the United States.

The university is committed to its shared values and shared equity leadership and will continue to provide updates and resources as they become available. All members of the GVSU community are encouraged to review the updated policy and procedures.
