3v3 Wheelchair Basketball Rules
Players and Substitutes
- A team shall consist of 3 players and 3 players are required to start a game.
- This is an open league, which means there are no gender requirements.
- All substitutes must report to the score table before entering the game. They must wait to be beckoned by the game official before entering the court.
Equipment
- All equipment is governed by the following rules:
- Acceptable gym attire must be worn.
- Sandals, hard-soled or black-soled shoes may not be worn.
- Guards, casts, and braces must be worn for medical reasons and must meet all specifications decided by the intramural sports staff.
- Any item, in the officials’ judgment, that constitutes a safety concern is not permitted.
- A game ball will be provided. (Teams may use their own ball if agreed upon by the opposing team & approved by the official)
- Women’s league will use the women’s sized basketball.
- Men’s league will use the men’s sized basketball.
- Co-Rec leagues can choose to use either ball.
- Matching colored jerseys or t-shirts with numbers are required. Jerseys will be provided for each team before the game. Jerseys must be returned after the game. Teams will be charged $25 for each jersey that is not returned.
- A shirt with sleeves must be worn under the jerseys provided by intramural sports staff.
- Teams are allowed to wear their own jerseys or t-shirts, provided they have numbers. Number may not be taped to the uniform.
- Hats and all headwear with knots and/or containing “hard” or metal material are illegal.
- No jewelry. All jewelry must be removed before the start of the game, or could result in a technical foul. EXCEPTIONS: medical or religious reasons and MUST be taped or covered. Tape for covering jewelry is not provided.
The Game
- Teams get two timeouts per game.
- Rock, paper, scissors to start the game - winner chooses offense or defense to start.
- Games are two 10-minute halves with a running clock.
- The last 1-minute of each half: clock will stop on whistles, made baskets, or time outs.
- Scoring:
- Points scored inside the 3-point line = 1 point.
- Points scored outside the 3-point line = 2 points.
- Rear wheels must be behind the line.
Fouls and Penalties
- Intentional contact with another player's wheelchair that impacts their progression down the court or their position
- Using a leg to help push a wheelchair or gain an advantage over an opponent
- Leaning over the front of the wheelchair to guard an opponent
- Throwing a ball off opponents chair to go out of bounds
- All fouls are team fouls:
- 4th team foul the opponent get one free throw
- 7th team foul the opponent get two free throws
- Shooting fouls (large wheels behind the free throw line)
- 1 free throw for inside the three-point line
- 2 free throws outside the three-point line
- If the shot was made no free throws awarded
