Jocelyn Olcott, author of International Women’s Year: The Greatest Consciousness Raising Event in History

In mid-June1975, thousands of people converged on Mexico City for the United Nations World Conference marking International Women’s Year (IWY). Billed as the “world’s largest consciousness-raising session,” the conference drew some twelve hundred delegates to the intergovernmental conference and an estimated six thousand more to a parallel nongovernmental organization (NGO) tribune.

In this talk, Dr. Jocelyn Olcott will discuss the game-changing role the IWY conference played in both fostering transnational feminist networks and impacting debates related to gender and development, including questions of what counts as economic activity.
