The Flagship University for Michigan's Future

Founded on the need for a four-year public institution in West Michigan, Grand Valley State University has been serving Michigan's economic, social, and environmental needs since 1963. We embrace and embody Michigan's gritty, hard-working nature, and move its economy forward by transforming today's learners into tomorrow's leaders. That is the Laker Effect.

Experiential Learning Opens Doors

When it comes to more career opportunities and long-term success, experience is a competitive advantage. At Grand Valley, that means plenty of chances for co-ops, internships, study abroad, collaborative student/faculty member research, and other experiential learning opportunities.

It is because of these things that employers are recruiting GVSU students early: Of those employed full time, 85% of graduates reported receiving offers before graduation, with 97% of all graduates accepting an offer within three months of graduating.

Building Active Leaders

Lakers are ready to work and ready to lead.

Michigan's employers values technical skills, but they are also recognizing the value of professional skills like communication, critical thinking, and leadership. Grand Valley’s liberal education foundation meets that need by producing lifelong learners, active leaders, and problem solvers. Since November 2023 more than 160,000 Michigan job postings requested liberal education skills such as leadership, critical thinking, intercultural competence, problem solving, and communications in addition to their bachelor's or master's degree requirement.

Lakers are prepared to lead and do so by example. Whether it is through innovation, scholarly research, or community engagement, our graduates have a reputation for being resourceful leaders that get the job done, regardless of their title.

Real Research. Real Impact.

Grand Valley offers hands-on research opportunities for students to collaborate with faculty on projects that address real Michigan issues.

These research initiatives span various disciplines, including environmental science, public health, engineering, and social sciences. By engaging in these projects, students gain valuable experience and contribute to solving pressing local problems such as water quality in the Great Lakes, public health challenges in urban areas, and sustainable development in rural communities. This collaborative research not only enhances students’ academic and professional skills but also has a tangible impact on improving the quality of life for Michigan residents.

Far-Reaching Networks

Because faculty members live, work, and network here, they are able to help students take advantage of West Michigan’s thriving economy through partnerships with local, national, and international companies. Grand Valley has always been "West Michigan's University" for these reasons, but it's reach is far greater.

A Grand Valley education is an education without boundaries, and the Laker Effect is worldwide. That means more opportunities, more connections, and more prospects for Grand Valley students and alumni at the undergrad and graduate level.
