GVSU Board of Trustees approves new programs in AI and software engineering
February 21, 2025
The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Board of Trustees has
approved the addition of four new degree programs within the College
of Computing: a bachelor’s and master’s in artificial intelligence
(AI) and software engineering. These programs were co-designed with
input from 160+ industry partners during the College of Computing’s
August brainstorming sessions, ensuring they align with real-world
industry needs. Developed as part of the Blue Dot project, this
initiative bridges academia and industry, equipping students with the
skills necessary to drive innovation and contribute to the region’s
technological and economic growth.
As AI continues to reshape industries, the College of Computing
is addressing the increasing demand for skilled professionals by
launching specialized AI degree pathways at both the undergraduate and
graduate levels. These programs offer cutting-edge training in
robotics, human-AI interaction, computer vision, natural language
processing, and cybersecurity, with a strong emphasis on ethical AI
and human-centered design. Students will have the opportunity to
specialize in artificial intelligence systems, cybersecurity &
artificial intelligence, edge & cloud artificial intelligence, and
human-centered artificial intelligence.
Software Engineering program will fill a critical gap in the
Greater Grand Rapids area and across Michigan by offering the region’s
first comprehensive, accredited SE degree. Designed to meet high
industry demand, this program positions GVSU as a leader in computing
education. Students will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge
technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, IoT, cloud computing, data
analytics, virtual reality, and embedded systems, ensuring they
graduate with the expertise needed to build reliable, efficient, and
cost-effective software systems.
"These programs were built in collaboration with industry
leaders to directly address workforce needs and prepare graduates for
the future of computing. By integrating real-world insights and
emerging technologies, we ensure that our students gain the skills and
expertise that companies are actively seeking,” stated Dean Marouane
Kessentini. “As the computing field continues to evolve, our programs
will adapt and innovate alongside it, maintaining a dynamic curriculum
that keeps GVSU graduates leading the front of technological advancement."
At the Board of Trustees meeting, Dean Marouane Kessentini,
alongside students Natalie Kline and Marcos Sanson, presented the new
programs for final approval, with Kline and Sanson sharing their
experiences at GVSU. Kline spoke about her work as an applied
researcher, collaborating with industry to develop mobile applications
and gaining AI expertise through GVSU’s computing programs. Sanson
highlighted his research journey as a Kindschi Fellow and
undergraduate researcher, showcasing the valuable opportunities
available to students. “My experiences at GVSU have not only expanded
my technical skill set but have also reinforced the importance of
industry collaboration in shaping the future of technology,” Kline said.
These new programs will be available for students to declare
soon. For more details, visit our website or contact
